This bronze portrait medal depicts the painter and illustrator Thomas Stothard and on the reverse a detail of one of his paintings.
This detail is from Stothard's best-known painting Canterbury Pilgrims Setting forth from the Tabard Inn, 1806, which is in the National Gallery. The acquisition of the present medal completed the Museum's set of Art Union medals.

Bought from Mrs. Neddy Allen for £50 (Departmental Fund), in 1977.

Historical significance: The detail on the reverse is from Stothard's best-known painting. It is in the National Gallery. The acquisition of the present medal completed the Museum's set of Art Union medals.
