Place of origin |
This sculpture of a boy holding an animal (perhaps a dog or an ermine) is made by an unknown artist in Florence in the second half of the 15th century.
The bust was at one time ascribed to the Master of the Marble Madonnas, and was produced in the same studio as two other busts in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Blumenthal Collection) and in the former Von Feist collection, Berlin. Since the figure in the companion bust (A.71-1910) holds the Medici ring, it is likely that the animal in the present bust also has an emblematic or heraldic significance.
