This Virgin and Child terracotta is made by Giuseppe Mazza (1653-1741) in Italy in ca. 1700 - 1740.
Terracotta and stucco were popular materials for sculptors in Northern Italy, especially Bologna, at this time.
Giuseppe Mazza (1653-1741) was the leading Bolognese sculptor of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, Mazza was responsible for the plastic decoration of chapels in the churches of Corpus Domini, the Madonna di Galliera and San Giacomo Maggiore, and for much other work in his native town. His most important works outside Bologna are six large bronze reliefs of scenes from the life of St. Dominic in Santi Giovanni e Paolo, Venice. A large number of small terracotta reliefs and statuettes bearing the initials G. M. are ascribed to Mazza.
