Place of origin |
This terracotta statuette representing St. Lucy was probably made in Madrid, in about 1750-1780. This could have been a model for a life-size statue; if so, it is a rare exception, as few models for Spanish sculpture are extant. The survival of this one may be due to its being produced by an academician, and at a time when there was greater recognition of the value of sculptors' models.

Brief description | Statuette, St Lucy; Terracotta Spanish Madrid? about 1750-80 18C |
Physical description | Terracotta statuette of St. Lucy standing, looking to her right, resting on her left leg, her right one bent behind her. In her left hand she holds a dish with two eyes on it, while her left hand grasps her cloak. She has long hair down to her shoulders, held in a hairband, and wears a hooded cloak over a dress and sandalled feet, just visible beneath the hem of her dress. The figure is made from a solid piece of terracotta, the surface of which is marked with squares and lines in pencil, as if it was to be scaled up for a larger work, perhaps a monumental marble, as yet unlocated. |
