Venus and Cupid

Statuette
19th century (cast)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This bronze statuette representing Venus and Cupid is cast after an ivory carved in 1624 by Georg Petel for Rubens, now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The bronze has been considered to be possibly a cast made in Antwerp only very slightly after the date of the ivory, but the fact that Cupid appears in it without wings indicates that it was cast after the ivory, in which Cupid's left wing is now missing, had been broken. In technical terms the cast is wholly modern in character, from the 19th century.
