Brief description
Plaster cast, wooden mihrab of Sayyida Ruqayya, Cairo, original AD 1133
Physical description
Plaster cast panels. The inventory record describes eight panels, however later amendments state that there are twenty
DimensionsThe inventory records suggest that a second, hand written list provides more accurate dimensions. It records the measurements for panels 1883-840 to 1883-840t, as opposed to the typed inventory entry which only covers 1883-840 to 1883-840g. The dimensions on the hand written list are as follows: 840. 2ft 4.75in by 5.75in 840a. 2ft 8in by 12.5in 840b. 2ft 1in by 9in 840c. 2ft 1in by 11in 840d. 2ft 6.5in by 11in 840e. 2ft 3in by 10.25in 840f. 2ft 1.5in by 1ft 2.75in 840g. 2ft 4in by 14.5in 840h. 17.75in by 18.75in 840i. 23in by 11in 840j. 2ft 6.75in by 6.75in 840k. 14.86in by 6.75in 840l. 1ft 10in by 10.5in 841m. missing 840n. 2ft 1in by 2ft 1in 840o. 2ft 5in by 14.25 in 840p. 11in by 11in 840q. 20.25in by 4.25in 840r. 1ft 6.5in by 2.75in 840s. 18.5in by 2.75in 840t. 1ft 9in by 3in.
Style
Object history
Plaster cast of wood carving in geometrical designs from the mihrab or niche of the Mosque of Sittéh Rukeyyeh, now in the Museum at Cairo. Saracenic. A.D. 1756-7. Moulded from paper cast No. 1234-1883 in the South Kensington Museum.

Note that the wooden mihrab from the tomb of Sayyida Ruqayya was constructed in 1133 AD (527 AH) so the 18th-century date given in the register's typed description is a mistake.
