Place of origin |
This statuette depicts St Jerome, naked except for a loose cloth draped over his shoulders and waist and holding out his left hand as if he is speaking. A skull rests at his foot and his cardinal's hat is on the ground nearby.
The style of the piece recalls coral montages from Naples or Trapani and it is likely that it was made in South Italy or Sicily. It is also reminiscent of the wax scenes produced by the Neapolitan artist Zumbo.
