This bronze cast statuette of a Panther walking is made by Rembrandt Bugatti in ca.1906.
Bugatti was an Italian animal sculptor. He was the son of the decorative artist and furniture designer Carlo Bugatti and nephew of the car manufacturer Berto Bugatti. He worked as an assistant under his father but then turned to sculpture. From around 1900 he lived in Paris and made his animal studies in the zoo: they were cast in bronze by A.A. Hébrard. He is influenced by Troubetzkoy.

Physical description
The walking panther is shown with the left foreleg stepping forward, the right hindleg raised from the ground, and the tail curved upwards. The slightly unfinished surface quality reveals the modelling of the clay before the model was cast in bronze. Signed and founder's stamp.

Transferred from the Tate Gallery in 1969 (written on in 1993). Bought for the National Gallery Millbank (the Tate Gallery) from A.A. Hébrard, Paris through the Abdy Galleries, London in 1929.
