Jug of white stoneware, with dark-blue Jasper dip and applied reliefs in white, and pewter lid. An adaptation of the Portland Vase shape (which was itself a copy of an antique Roman cameo-cut glass vase, probably of the first century after Christ). The figures have been interpreted as, on one side, Peleus led to Thetis by Cupid in the presence of Poseidon, on the other, Peleus and Aphrodite watching the sleeping Thetis.

'Portland jugs' 'blue with white basreliefs' are listed in Wedgwood's '1843' Price Book from 1846 and appear to have continued in production throughout the century.
