Games Board

1650-1700 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Backgammon board of oak veneered with lignum vitae and other woods. It is composed of two hinged parts of similar design. In the centre of each face is an oval compartment of ebony inlaid in sycamore with an interlacing device of two Gs and two Ks reversed. Above this monogram is a coronet and below a spring of forget-me-not. This oval compartment is within a lozenge of lignum-vitae, which is enclosed in a rectangle; in each corner of the rectangle is a quadrant of kingwood. The sides of the board are decorated with panels of lignum-vitae, and the inside is similarly ornamented, the alternate triangular spaces being of ebony. There are thirty-two satinwood draughtsmen, of which sixteen are stained black. All are carved with a rosette on each face.
