Carpet
1930s (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Rectangular embroidery, probably intended as a carpet. The base is an open weave jute or hessian through which the all-over embroidery has been tamboured. The embroidery is executed in polychrome wools in three shades of blue, three of pink/red, three of orange/yellow, four of green, fawn, puplish pink, and pink. The main ground is ecru-coloured. The pattern is symmetrical about a vertical axis, comprising stylised flowers and arabesques distributed around a central compartment. It echoes conventional tufted carpet designs of the 18th and 19th centuries. Identifiable are roses and tulips. The other flowers are so stylised it is impossible to be sure what they represent.
