Box Spanish American: 17th century. Pine wood covered with leather with decoration tooled in relief, incised and coloured in red, blue, white and yellow. Hasp and round openwork escutcheon of iron. Modern interior lining of brown satin. Rectangular with hinged lid. On the top, two surrounds of scrolled floral stems enclosing a central oblong panel in which appears the Imperial Double Headed Eagle supported by heraldic beasts. On the front of the lid a border of pomegranate stems with a similar pair of confronting beasts. Back and sides are decorated with borders of tulip stems and other conventional scrolled stems. Plain bottom.

Gallery label | TWO BOXES covered with leather stamped in relief and painted in brilliant colours, and fitted with wrought iron mounts. A conspicuous feature of the design of the leatherwork is the double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire, the emblem of the Spanish monarchs under the Habsburgs, a device not infrequently found on old buildings and works of art throughout Spanish America.
