Chest of Drawers
1675-1725 (made)
Place of origin |
Marquetry chest of two drawers. The top is decorated with concentric circles and curved bands of sycamore on a ground of lignum vitae. The fronts of the drawers are also ornamented with lignum vitae within sycamore borders. The sides of the chest are burr walnut. The drawers are each fitted with two brass drop handles and six-foil plates and a shaped lock plate engraved with floral ornament. The department file suggests that the brass handles, plates and lock-plate were new upon acquisition.
The chest of drawers was acquired in two seperate parts, the upper containing the two drawers, and a low base (numbered 249A-1898) containing one drawer between heavy mouldings on raised pad feet. The low base was deaccessioned (RF 1933/4654).
