The combination of gold, deep blue enamel and seed pearls was a fashionable one in the years around 1800. These earrings illustrate the renewed vigour of the French jewellery trade in the years following Napoleon's accession. Their delicacy is perhaps partly a reflection of the shortage of raw materials for jewellery.

Brief description
Pair of hoop earrings, gold, seed pearls and blue enamel, France ca. 1810
Physical description
Narrow hoop of gold, the front section of which is wrapped round with a spiralling strip of blue enamel, and seed pearls threaded on wire, with a blue-enamelled bead at each end. The earring opens above the upper enamelled bead and has a small loop at the top which would be behind the ear when worn.
