Object history
The red inventory number on the reverse ('P.M. 772') marks this piece as having been formerly in the collection of John Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913). The enamel had been acquired by Morgan from the collection of the art dealer Charles Mannheim in May 1901. It is listed as number 164 in the catalogue of Mannheim's collection (Collection Charles Mannheim. Objects d'arts. catalogue, rédigé par M. Emile Molinier, Paris, 1898, p. 46). Shortly after Morgan bought the enamel, it was sent on loan to the Victoria and Albert Museum, where it remained until 1912. The collection was then shipped to New York, when the the inventory number on the reverse ('P.M.772') was added. The roundel was bought by the New York art dealer Henry Duveen in 1916.
