Miniature mosaic panels, now known as 'micromosaics', were a particular speciality of Rome in the Nineteenth Century. Set into jewellery or box lids, they were very popular tourist souvenirs. They were first made in the Vatican workshops, but by 1817 the Scottish traveller Charlotte Eaton recorded that there were 'hundreds of artists, or rather artisans, who carry on the manufactory of mosaics on a small scale' around the Piazza di Spagna.
