Artist/Maker
Place of origin

This outer watchcase was commissioned from Martin Matthews in 2007 for a short video on the technique of case-making made for the William and Judith Bollinger Jewellery Gallery at the V&A and for the V&A's website. The case was made to fit around the inner case of a watch by Best (V&A museum number 253-1891), made in 1769-70. The film can be seen on the V&A's website among the jewellery videos in the section on Fashion, Jewellery and Accessories.

Martin Matthews is from a family of watchcase makers who made their first cases in the early 19th century. In the film he demonstrates how to spin the case using a bow lathe and how to make the joint or hinge.
