Marks and inscriptions
  • Five-petalled flower maker's mark stamped on reverse, at base of stem. Identity of maker unknown.
  • Circular assay mark, very worn, visible on bowl by stem. (For both marks on another apostle spoon with St John finial, and for Bristol attribution, see Phillips: Spoons (1980), lot 97, and Ellis Catalogue, lots 148, 150 and 155. For Bristol marks, see Kent (1992), p.170.)
  • 'St Iohn' (Inscribed on the stem, above the maker's mark.)
