Spoon

Spoon
ca. 1975
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Handmade spoons can be created using only hammers and dies. These six samples show the stages in making a silver spoon from a rectangular silver rod. The rod is first forged into a rough spoon shape and then the handle is formed through hammering. Decoration is added to the handle by stamping it onto an engraved steel die. Further hammering deepens and shapes the bowl of the spoon. The spoon is then polished and rough edges are smoothed before it is ready for use.
