This small knife was described as probably Turkish when it was given to the Museum in 1951. It may also have been made in Bosnia, whose Muslim population specialised in producing small souvenirs in the Ottoman tradition as late as the second half of the 20th century. They were particularly adept at inlaying metal into bone and fruitwood.

Small decorative knife with inlaid bone hilt and iron blade, Balkans or Turkey, 1850-1950.
Physical description
Small knife with an inlaid bone hilt and a leaf-shaped blade. The blade has a damascene inscription in Arabic on one side, and an arabesque on the other. The hilt is inlaid with bands of red and silver dots, separated by strips of silver. The end of the hilt is curved to form a slight beak. There is a collar of silver with zigzag engraving between the hilt and the blade.
