This vase was one of the last of Gunnel Nyman's (1909-48) designs before her early death. Although her career was brief, her work is now recognised as comparable to and in some cases foreshadowing the classic works of Wirkkala and Sarapaneva, especially in her interpretations of such subjects as 'Simpukka' (mussel) and 'Calla' (lily). Her particular interests were in the combination of heavy crystal in fluid, organic forms with trapped complimentary effects such as bubbles or, as in this case, opaque white glass. She also designed for Karhula and Riihimäki glassworks as well as in the fields of furniture, lighting, metalwork, graphics and textiles.
