Punch Bowl

ca. 1805 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Punch bowl with a circular footring and the sides are nipped in just above the base to form a foot. The sides then slant outwards towards a very wide circular mouth. The bowl is in grey stoneware and the interior has a shiny, lead glaze. The exterior of the bowl is in unglazed, grey stoneware with moulded and applied relief decoration of a band of leaves just above the foot. Above the leaves is a frieze consisting of a group of topers, an inn scene with huntsmen, a group of Neo-Classical putti and a goat. The well of the bowl is painted in enamel colours with two landscape scenes, one above the other. The lower is of a river scene and the upper of a house and tree with a ruin in the background, all under a clear glaze. The sides of the interior are painted with a band of gold arches and dots, above which is a band of diamonds containing gold flower shapes. The diamonds are outlined in brown on-glaze enamel and black. The rim of the bowl is outlined in gold.
