Production | The design is a copy of the Temperance Basin by François Briot, about 1585. The dish depicts the figure of Temperance holding a wine cup in the central area, surrounded by a broad band of ornament containing four plaques that depict figures representing air, water, earth, and fire. In addition, oval panels on the rim depict the Seven Liberal Arts – Grammar, Reason, Rhetoric, Music, Arithmetic, Geometry and Astrology – and their patron Minerva. |
