These tiles were part of a wider decorative scheme for the Criterion, a 'gastronomic temple' with dining rooms, grand hall and theatre in Piccadilly, London. The Criterion was designed by Thomas Verity and completed in 1873. Simpson was responsible for interior decorations and the tile pictures, such as this putti, were designed and painted by A.S. Coke.
This section of the tile scheme was probably designed for the buffet area and was rediscovered when the building was renovated in 1969.
