Furnishing Fabric
1890s (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Woven furnishing fabric of patterned plush fabric. The woven design shows a half-drop repeating pattern of clusters of flowers on straight stems surrounded with fern-like leaves enclosed in a stylised framework of interlocking stems. These converge at intersections into stylised patterns and divide to provide the ogee repeating structure of the design. The flowers are in orangey-brown with maroon centres. The ground shows areas of maroon and olive green with leaves also in maroon. The intersecting stems are in orangey-brown and the pattern is outlined throughout with cream. The fabric has a dense woollen pile and is constructed with alternative wool and cotton binding warp and weft threads. Although using a velvet technique the fabric approaches the weight of a machine-woven Wilton carpet.
