William Reading, whose initials may be those on this plate, was a die-sinker (mould-maker) from Birmingham the centre of the British mould-making industry. Moulds with the initials 'WR' are known to habe been used by the French glassworks Baccarat, and some of the same designs also appear in the pattern books of the Val St. Lambert glassworks, Belgium. It is possible that William Reading re-cut moulds for factories abroad or cut new designs to their commission.
