Place of origin |
Fragments of embroidered red silk on undyed linen. Egyptian, Mamluk, ca. AD1250- 1500. Reapeating motifs cover the fabric. The motifs are small (5x7mm) and roughly floral in shape. The linen is 30x30 tpc (system1:system2) with some light staining. There are four main fragments and some smaller pieces. 'Piece two' has two pieces of the same fabric stitched down the centre (patterns in opposite direction) using whip stitch with white thread. At one end of the join is a small piece of another fabric. This piece (10x6mm) is tapestry woven, possibly with silk, in V shapes of differing colours - light blue, dark blude and orange.
