Materials and techniques | The (blue) ground is woven in 2-1 twill (Z direction) and the design is formed by two lancé wefts bound in 1-3 twill (Z direction). A gilded membrane strip (possibly catgut), twisted around a linen core (type of thread sometimes known as ‘Cyprian gold’), is used for the main body of the design. Second supplementary weft, white silk, is used primarily for the details (face, hands, feet, flower petals, altar cloth). In terms of the design, weave structure, technique and the materials implemented, this lampas should be brought to connection to the one numbered as 146-1981. It is highly likely that both lampases were produced in the same weaving centre at about the same time. |
