Furnishing Fabric

1774-1780 (made)
Place of origin

Furnishing fabric of cotton plate-printed in brown with pagodas among rocks and small chinoiserie scenes, fishing and long tailed bird, taken from Edwards and Darly, 'New Book of Chinese Designs', 1754. In the Textile and Fashion Collection there is a cotton with the same design, printed in red (T.233-1970), which however is not long enough to show the full repeat. This example's dimensions allow to view the entire length of the pattern, but not its full width. Other pieces of 'Pagoda' cottons are known to be in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Musée de L'Impression sur Etoffes in Mulhouse and in Henry Francis Du Pont Museum (Winterthur, Delaware).
