This scene showing the mythological god Vulcan at his forge is taken from a painting by
L de Boullongne le Jeune, engraved by L Desplaces in 1717. It was used to represent Fire,
in a composition called ‘les quatre éléments’ (the four elements, of which the others were water,earth and air).
