Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Furnishing fabric of plate printed cotton on a fancy ground of overlapping lozenges depicting mythological scenes emblematic of the elements.

Fire is represented by Vulcan foraging for armour while Cyclops works at a furnace in the background.

Air is represented by Juno, in a chariot drawn by peacocks in the clouds, smiling at a putto holding a large butterfly.

Earth is represented by Tellumo, holding a huge cornucopia, contemplating a quartered globe bearing a horse, elephant, lion and parrot which represent the four continents.

Water is represented by a goddess, in a chariot drawn by dolphins, being offered a bunch of coral by a putto with butterfly wings.

These scenes are divided by a broad, vertical stripe with trophies emblematic of the four elements and by a narrow stripe with the twelve signs of the Zodiac.
