SILK, 7th - 9th century.
Weft-faced compound twill, l/2 and 1\2. Warp of silk (virtually untwisted in piece on left, / in that on right), proportion 2 main to 1 binding. Weft of silk of 4 colours, 1 pick of each in turn. The piece on the left, acquired from Liege, is probably from a church in that area.
These silks may have been woven in Persia.
