This picture was made by the Hangzhou Dongfang Hong ('East is Red') Factory, which has its roots as a factory pioneering the art of machine-woven pictures in China, using paintings and photographs. During the years of the Cultural Revolution the factory produced many propaganda images based on portraits and photographs of leaders.
When this portrait of Mao Zedong apepared in newspapers, the caption read:
'Day and night, our great leader Chairman Mao devotes his attention to domestic and international affairs'.
