Object history
Registered File number 1993/721.

Hammada is an Arabic woman's name, which suggests a Middle Eastern connection. Tim Stanley, Senior Curator, Asia notes that 'the single figures in the narrower stripe appear to be drawn from the shadow puppet tradition in that region, which is usually called by the Turkish name Karagöz (Καραγκιόζης/Karaghiozis in Greek, Qaragoz in Arabic)'.
Some of the paired figures in the wider stripe appear to be based on European characters.
