Warp: White cotton; Z18S; 23 threads/inch; 87/10 cms. Depressed.
Weft: Light blue cotton; Z7S; 2 shoots after each row of knots; 12 knots per inch; 46/10 cms.
Pile: Wool; 12 colours: red, dark blue, light blue, dark brown, light yellow, yellow, dark yellow, brown, light brown, green, dark green, pink.
Knots: Asymmetrical open to left and tied around two threads. 144 sq/inch, 1978/sq dcm.
Sides: One cord oversewn with brown wool.
Ends: 0.5" (1 cm) plain weave with white cotton weft with one central weft in red and one in dark blue wool. Knotted warp fringe 1.5" (4 cms) long.

Field has a red ground with black outlined, white petalled palmette, crowned by tiny multicoloured flowerheads; with dark blue and green cloud bands in top two corners and either side of palmette which rises from tricorne base. Also from the base grow two naturalistic floral sprigs. Border: dark blue ground with floral meander, each flower linked by yellow and red foliage. Red pile, as in field, beyond each border.

Object history
Manufactured by the state factories for E. H. Athanassoglu who, the donor says, was "boss of Eastern Trades Ltd and the founder of Rumanian Carpets Ltd". This quality was called 110,000 knots (supposedly per square metre).
