This image shows the interior of the Crystal Palace during the Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations in 1851. The Crystal Palace was located in Hyde Park in central London until 1854, when it was taken down and rebuilt in Sydenham in south London. The Great Exhibition was visited by more than six million people, and one hundred thousand exhibits were on display. The fountain, visible in this lithograph, was a popular meeting point during the exhibition. The central transept was designed to allow elm trees, seen on the right, to grow inside the building.
