This medal was awarded to the circus performer, Fred Fitzroy in about 1890-93. His performance as a bare backed horse rider and as an acrobat and trapeze artist was widely admired and the medal was presented to him by either a patron or a proprietor of a circus. The presentation occured before about 1893 as a photograph of that date shows him wearing the medal. This photograph, where he is aged about 12 years old is in the Theatre Museum collections.
The V&A was also given a small collection of medals awarded to Fred Fitzroy. The medal itself was mass produced by a manufacturer in Birmingham.
