Marks and inscriptions
"JR" in Gothic script within an oval shield, "&" within a circular shield, "S" in Gothic script within a square shield with recessed corners, a crown within an heraldic shield, "BP" with an oval shield at right angles to the main string, and "BENARES" within a rectangular lozenge with chamfered edges. (On the back of the tail of the stem Marked on the handle with the trademarks of John Round and Son of Sheffield and the tradename of BENARES. The crown mark imitates the Sheffield Assay office mark. BP stands for Best Plate and was sometimes used on unplated items such as this.)
