This casket is carved in various degrees of relief with episodes from the life of Rama and characters from the great Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Its maker belonged to the hereditary Gudigar community of carvers. In the 19th century these highly skilled craftsmen began to produce virtuoso objects such as this for western consumers and for display at international exhibitions.
