Physical description

A cabinet and tray for the incense game, with two doors on the right-hand side and four drawers on the left, with an additional drawer at the bottom that runs the full width of the cabinet. It is decorated with blossoming cherry trees on Mount Yoshino, Kyoto, with rafts and fallen petals in water in gold and silver hiramaki-e ('low sprinkled picture') and takamaki-e ('high sprinkled picture') and gold foil on a black lacquer ground with nashi-ji lacquer. The interior and underside are of nashi-ji lacquer; silver mounts and fittings. the top drawer containing 120 incense tickets (ko-fuda) each with an inscription and a spray of flowers in gold, a tray decorated with cherry blossoms in the mountains and rivers of Yoshino near Kyoto, cylindrical brazier with silver lining, a cylindrical box for counters and a nest of incense boxes (ju-kogo).
The cabinet contains 120 counters (ko-fuda), of brown wood, numbered and with sprays of flowers in gold hiramaki-e; Box fitted with tray forming three compartments for counters; Block for use as a paper-weight and also for cutting up incense; Board (gin-dai) with ten markers of engravedmother-of-pearlin the form of cherry blossoms; Nest of three boxes with cover for incense; Cylindrical brazier, silver-lined for incense, with wooden lid lined with brocade; Box from which incense is drawn by perticipants in the game; Writing box, with a lid of gold fundame sprinkled with hirame; and tray with inkstone and silver water-dropper in the form of cherry blossoms and leaves.
