This ivory brooch depicts a girl in a low cut dress. Her head is turned towards the left and she looks downwards at a dove which rests on her right shoulder. Her hair falls in ringlets over her bare shoulder. According to the donors JA Schuller was born in Stuttgart in 1839. He came to England in 1866 and married an English woman in 1870. This brooch was carved in 1870 as a present to his bride. From then until 1908 he carved many beautiful statuettes in ivory which were swiftly bought by Americans. He died in July 1912, aged 73.
