Bought in 1874 from the William Tayler collection (Bengal Civil Service 1829-1859: appointed Commissioner at Patna in 1855)
Historical context
The engraved flower medallion shares design elements seen in the decoration of the railings of the Bharhut stupa, erected in the 2nd century BC. This stone, possibly a piece from a board game, was found in a tank at Patna, the ancient city of Pataliputra.
