Physical description
Figure: Buddha Sakyamuni is seated on a double-lotus throne, his right hand raised in a gesture of exposition or instruction (vitarkamudra). He wears a monk's robe drawn over his left shoulder. The figure was enobled with a circular nimbus, traces of which are intact.

Object history note
This sculpture was acquired in the 1960's by the present owner from Professor S.Eilenberg.
Purchased from Alex. Biancardi at a discounted figure of £6250. in 1995, partly with Neil Kreitman Foundationw.
Historical context note
In posture and attitude, this figure relates closely to the stone Buddhas associated with the great Buddhist monuments of Central Java.
