Historical context
Those polychromed earthenware tiles depict scenes from the Buddhist Jataka stories which recount the previous incarnations of the Buddha. They are however set in what appear to be contemporary Sinhalese settings, with the palacial architecture and court costumes reflecting the style of the late Kandyan period. The painting style most directly relates to murals at the Medawala temple in Kandy District, attributed to a rennovation of 1775.
