Red coral was a very expensive material to obtain in Japan. Its use upon this box, to depict the camellias and chrysanthemums, reflected the wealth of the owner and the fine quality of the piece. The contrast of gold, red and silver on a plain black background is very stark and dramatic emphasising the rich colours and materials on the box.
