Sairo was employed by the Kiryu Kosho Kaisha (The First Japanese Manufacturing and Trading Company), an offical company established in 1874. After the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1878, the company opened a branch in Paris. A label on the back of the tray reads: "Made by Sairo about 1876. Very difficult work to execute, and very rare of so large a size. Hayashi 27 / 186." It seems to be in the handwriting of Hayashi Tadamasa, one of France's leading dealers in Japanese art who helped sell the remaining art objects at the close of the exhibition.
