Historical context | In 1804 Constable did not exhibit; according to Farington he spent much of his time at East Bergholt painting portraits of the local farmers and their wives. He first saw 'The Chateau de Steen' by Rubens in Sir Georeg Beaumont's collection in this year (Greig, Vol. II, p. 189). His visit to Hampshire is established by the inscription on No. 53 [796-1888]. |
