This silver medal depicts Cornelius Tromp, Lieutenant-Admiral of the Dutch fleet. Tromp distinguished himself in the Second (1665-1667) and Third (1672-74) Anglo Dutch Wars.
The medal was probably struck to commemorate the Four Days Battle (11 June to 14 June) 1666 which was fought off the Flemish and English coasts. Both sides claimed victory though the outcome was inconclusive. It remains one of the longest naval engagements in history.
