Physical description
Medal, silver, struck from a die, 'the British Empire Medal' commemorating the War in South Africa, 1899-1902. Obv. Crowned bust of King Edward VII to left, with figures of Peace, Justice and Industry, and views of Bloemfontein, Pretoria, and the Houses of Parliament, Westminster. The portrait is surrounded by a riband inscribed TRANSVAAL & ORANGE RIVER COLONIES. The figures at the sides are identified by inscriptions JVSTITIA INDVSTRIA. Rev.: SOUTH AFRICA VIRTVTE ET DVCTV. PAX. QUAERITVR. BELLO 1901. Earl Roberts, Commander-in-Chielf, seated on horseback; above figures of Fame and Victory; in the background, soldiers on the march. Victory holds a laurel wreath above the head of Earl Roberts while Fame sounds a trumpet.
