A Trifling Mistake!!

Print
1803-1809
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A wealthy man sits, with his well-dressed daughters, around a table in a fashionable interior. He is wearing gentleman's 'undress', including an informal soft cap, and his foot is wrapped and raised to indicate that he has gout, a condition associated with the consumption of rich food and wine. To their right, a liveried servant holds a tray containing fish. The speech bubbles indicate that the man has sent his servant to purchase two parasols for his daughters - the servant, misunderstanding, has brought home two pairs of soles (i.e. sole fish).
